Tommy Kearns New York Carolina Club Basketball Speaker Series

Please join the New York Carolina Club as it hosts a free virtual event with author
Ron Smith ’79 as he discusses his book The Tar Heels: A History of UNC

Basketball Volume Two – Dean Smith, 1961-1969. The book tells the story in
words, photos and memorabilia of Dean Smith’s first eight seasons as the UNC
head basketball coach when the Tar Heels became the only program in ACC
history to win three consecutive regular season and tournament championships
and three consecutive East Regional championships.

Hosting the discussion will be Jim Lampley ’71 who has had an illustrious forty-
six year career in both television and radio sports, news, and entertainment. A
five-time Emmy Award winner, his noteworthy accomplishments are many. Of
particular note is his fourteen Olympics television assignments, most of them as
a studio host, the largest number for any American broadcaster. He spent thirty-
one years as host of boxing and Wimbledon tennis for HBO and as a senior
reporter for that network’s program Real Sports. He currently is a Professor of the
Practice at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill teaching a
Communications course entitled Evolution of Storytelling in American Electronic
News Media.
